Ansons Voyages :-
At the beginning of the war with Spain and France in 1740, George
Anson was given charge of a squadron of six ships with the rank of
commodore and ordered to the Pacific to attack Spanish possessions
and to capture one of the Acapulco treasure ships. Anson's second
lieutenant on the 'Centurion' during the voyage round the world,
1740-44, was Piercy Brett whose drawings were engraved for the
official account of the voyage. They demonstrate the concerns of
naval officers in making such drawings, in particular the precise
delineation of landfall which Brett often annotates with a key. They
are some of the earliest accurate depictions of South America.
George Anson, first baron Anson, a commodore in the British Royal
Navy, set sail on a circumnavigation in 1740. Anson made a
successful attack on Paita in November 1741. These were all
eventally published 1747-8 as A voyage round the world, in the years
MDCCXL, I, II, III, IV. By George Anson Printed for the Author; By
John and Paul Knapton, in Ludgate-Street ** Some of these are marked
