Catesby, Edwards & Seligmann

animals and birds
Nuremberg 1770-1773. Johann Michael Seligmann, was a German publisher, who issued a nine volume compilation of the work of the Englishmen Mark Catesby (1683-1749) and George Edwards (1694-1773). Catesby has been called the "Founder of American Ornithology" because of his monumental Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands (London, 1731-43), the first natural history of American flora and fauna. Seligmann issued this  a few years after Edwards and Catesby  published their  work; the text was translated into German by Georg Leonard Huth, and Seligmann produced  new plates based on the images of the two Englishmen.
George Edwards (1694-1773) was an English naturalist and ornithologist, known as the "father of British ornithology". Edwards was born at Stratford, Essex. In his early years he travelled extensively through mainland Europe, studying natural history, and gained some reputation for his coloured drawings of animals, especially birds.'A Natural History of Uncommon Birds, and of Some Other Rare and Undescribed Animals, Quadrupeds, Reptiles, Fishes, Insects, Etc., Exhibited in Two Hundred and Ten Copper-Plates, from Designs Copied Immediately from Nature, and Curiously Colored After Life. With a Full and Accurate Description of Each Figure. To Which is Added, A Brief and General Idea of Drawing, and Painting in Water-Colours; with Instructions for Etching on Copper with Aqua Fortis: Likewise Some Thoughts on the Passage of Birds; and Additions to Many of the Subjects Described in this Work.' London, 1743-1751, 4 Vols.
Mark Catesby (1683-1749)  came to the American colonies first in 1712 to visit his sister, wife of the secretary to the Governor of Virginia. Catesby's "visit" lasted seven years, during which time his sister provided him with  social and scientific contacts and Catesby indulged his  collecting. Many of Catesby's specimens were sent to England and  in 1719 he was something of a celebrity on his return. In 1722 Catesby returned to America to pursue  his Natural History of Carolina Florida and the Bahama Islands , published in London between 1731 and 1743.The plants shown are all from this region.

Witch Hazel + Millipede
Antique/Vintage  folio engraving from Mark Catesby's 'The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands: Containing the Figures of Birds, Beasts, Fishes, Serpents, Insects, and Plants . Together with their Descriptions in English and French'. This  (probable) third edition of the work was printed on fine woven paper for Benjamin White in London in 1771.  From 1731 to 1747, The Natural History was published in two volumes of five parts comprising a total of 200 plates. The Appendix, which was compiled from specimens available in England, added 20 more. The artist George Edwards revised and re-issued both volumes from 1748 to 1756, and in 1771 the publisher Benjamin White reissued the Edwards version adding Linnaean names to all Mark Catesby’s plants and animals . All editions have the same number of plates. Original hand-colouring from the first natural history of American flora and fauna. Catesby was born in England in 1682, and  spent several years of his life in the colonies studying the natural flora and fauna. He was so fascinated he produced the first colour plate, natural history work on American flora and fauna. One of the signatures of Catesby's work is that it incorporates plant and animal life on the same page.  Catesby studied under Joseph Goupy where he learned how to etch the plates himself. The result of his labors is the wonderfully detailed and informative work which gave a glimpse of the world beyond.Catesby's work was also the first to abandon the Indian names for his subjects, trying to establish scientific names based on generic relationships. Linnaeus used Catesby's work as the basis for his system of binomial nomenclature for the American species. ---** This is pre Linnean labelling version  and NOT the 2018 Oppenheimer facsimile edition which is $400 per plate but from the paper type is a re issue  c 1810 due to the size  also not matching the original ** If the pre 1771 edition you have a bargain £225 inc delivery due to size
