Vetusta Monumenta 4.

Vetusta Monumenta / Ancient Monuments p. 4

The society of antiquaries issued engravings of about to be lost or threatened structures in the series Vetusta Monumenta (Ancient Monuments), which ran intermittently from 1718 to 1906.The full title is "Vetusta monumenta quae ad Rerum Britanicarum memoriam conservandam Societas Antiquariorum Londini sumptu suo edenda curavit", but the volumes are normally simply listed as Vetusta Monumenta. There were various reprints of both individual papers and collected volumes, and the plates were often published separately from the text. "The seven volumes are dated 1747, 1789, 1796, 1815, 1835, 1883 and 1906 (for the fourth part of vol.7). The plates for vol. 1 were published between 1718 and 1747; plates for vol. 2 were published between 1748 and 1789; plates for vol. 3 were published between 1790 and 1796; plates for vol. 4 were published between 1799 and 1815; plates for vol. 5 were published between 1816 and 1835; plates for vol. 6 were published between 1821 and 1885; plates for the four parts of vol. 7 were published between 1893 and 1906. The distinguished engraver George Vertue was an early member and was responsible for most engravings up to his death in 1756. Each member of the Society received a free copy these are scarce as few antiquarians break books most are in library collections being only printed for members . Images 45 x 30 cm Single page

Mosaic pavements from Winterton and Roxby Tria pavimenta tessellata Romani operis... (Three tiled Roman pavements) Winteroniae Lincolniensie / 1751
Tria pavimenta tessellata Romani operis, animantium figuris, aliisque diversi generais ornamentis, variis coloribus eleganter depicta; quae in agro Wintertoniae, Lincolniensis comitatus oppidi, prope fluvius Trentam et Humbram anno MDCCXLVII primum reperiebantur. His quartum est adjunctum, apud Roxby vicinum oppidum, sed nondum penitus retectum. Tria priora ex his pavimentis contigua fere sibi invicem locabantur, quorum primum tridinio fuisse substratum conjectari licet. The pavements were unearthed in Winterton in c. 1747 and Roxby in 1699; they were re-excavated in the late 1950s.
