Martinet Birds

from Histoire Naturelle Des Oiseaux [Natural History of the Birds]  published  by L'Imprimerie Royale, Paris: 1770-86  by François-Nicolas Martinet (c. 1725-c. 1804) (artist and engraver)  Comte de Buffon (Georges Louis Leclerc) (1707-1788) (editor)  Sizes  8.75 x 6.5 inches, image and title, 10 x 8.25 inches platemark,
Martinet also illustrated Buffon with similar pics so both will be included on this page and the uncoloured buffon on their own page. add this to the signature confusion as below and Martinet is NOT my favourite artist

12.75 x 9.25 inches, overall plus edge lined mount and matte. The folio/book  included a range  of birds both native to Europe, plus Asia and the Americas. This was   1,008 hand coloured bird prints edited by Georges-Louis Marie Leclerc, the Count of Buffon   published in 42 parts from 1765 to 1780 by Edme Louis Daubenton , illustrated with engravings by Martinet. Francois Nicolas Martinet was a French engraver and draughtsman. Born in 1731, Martinet  trained as an engineer and draftsman.  Martinet's son Alexandre eventually assisted him and completed many engravings, as shown from signatures and dates on the prints. Martinet also had two sisters, Angélique and Marie Thérèse, who were engravers as well, but it is not known if both worked with him.  Employed from 1756 by the court  as Graveur du Cabinet du Roi, under the auspices of the Menus Plaisirs du Roi. Some of these he engraved himself, while others were drawn by him but engraved by his sister Thérèse Martinet (born c. 1731) but as both signed Martinet this is not helpful
