Abraham Munting [1626 -
1683] was a Dutch botanist and artist, who studied
medicine and botany as a young man and traveled extensively.
Upon returning to Holland, he joined the University of
Groningenand stayed for 24 years becoming professor of
botany and chemistry. Here he directed extensive
botanical gardens from 1658 to 1683. Munting’s most
famous work "Naauwkeurige Beschryving Der Aardgewassen"
(Accurate Description of Terrestrial Plants) in 1696 was
published posthumously by Pieter van der Aa &
Francois Halma, Leyden & Utrecht, Netherlands: 1696 and
is an enlarged and revised version of his previous book
"Waare Oeffening der Planten" (1672, 1682). Naauwkeurige
included 118 plates and was later republished in a series of
Latin editions beginning in 1702 under the title
Phytographia Curiosa. Additional to Munting, two other
artists are credited, Joseph Mulder and Jan Goeree, who
designed the title page art and possibly some of the
landscape backgrounds in other plates. The Latin names of
the species are presented on ribbon-like scrolls or tablets.

Bio:-Abraham Munting was the son of Henricus Munting (1583-1658). He studied at the Rijkshogeschool Groningen and graduated 'De Turffs, sive de crespitibus bituminosis' . Because his father insisted that he would take over the famous Hortus garden , he continued to study and research.visiting the universities of Franeker , Utrecht and Leiden , and went to France in 1649. In 1651 he returned to Groningen and after his father's death took over the botanical garden. In 1672 his work was published Waare Oeffening der Planten , with a second edition appearing in 1682. In 1696 Pieter Vander Aa in Leiden and Francois Halma in Utrecht published a very extensive version of this work under the title Accurate Descriptions of Earth, In 1702 his work was translated into Latin by Franz Kiggelaer . Munting was a rector of the Rijkshogeschool Groningen in 1675-1675 where after his death in 1683 his son Albert Munting took over the botanical garden.
