Botanical James Petiver 1711
Mynde was as engraver, working in City of London on
general plates. He had a large studio, charging 20 guineas for an
apprentice but later trebling it. Responsible for numerous stock book
illustrations and later engraver to the Royal Society.
Noël-Antoine Pluche (13 November 1688 – 19 November 1761), known
as abbé Pluche, was a French priest. Now known for his Spectacle
de la nature, a 'popular 'work of natural history. Pluche, son of a
baker, was born in Reims, in a street now named after him. .. His
Spectacle de la nature, ou Entretiens sur les particularités de
l'Histoire naturelle qui ont paru les plus propres à rendre les jeunes
gens curieux et à leur former l'esprit was published in nine volumes
1732–1742, and widely translated all over Europe. Although it influenced
many to become naturalists, it was a not as scientifically accurate as
most.

James Petiver (c. 1665–1718) lived in
London where he held an apothecary, but became well-known for his
study of botany and entomology. From Petiver, J. 1764:

"James Petiver, known primarily as a botanist and as one of the founders of British entomology, went to considerable expense to have ships’ captains and surgeons supply him with specimens of natural history from around the world for his museum. In the Gazophylacium, one of Petiver’s rarest and most interesting productions, the figures of reptiles and amphibians, plants, shells, insects, birds, and other animals are displayed together on the same plate. It was the intention of both author and publisher that the text be pasted down on the versos of the plates facing the appropriate plate, with dedication mounted at the foot of each, as in the Spencer Library’s copy; however, in most states of the work, text is simply printed on the back of each plate. £82 tinted". Now £45 each (Inflation ?) untinted text available just ask. This was produced in various editions the only clue is the text states by Petiver at Aldersgate and but 5 sections get one free !. A later section is by Christopher Bateman dated 1711 but it then also has a section of text in English so fits none of the descriptions in any of the libraries ie standard 18THc mishmash all later bound together. Luckily spared the pink watercolour that mars many. They could be tinted but would benefit from a tinter who checks what the items were coloured first before reaching for the pink and yellow wash.

This strange Animal is found in the Philippine Isles, and its usual Abode there is on Trees -- 9. Balanus compressus albus, fex fissuris fulcatus. This odd shell mr. James Cunninghame brought me among the rest from the Isle of Ascension -- 10. Papilio albus Angolensis apicibus miniaceis. Mr. John Kirckwood first brought me this from Angola, it hath since been caught at Wida, by Mr. Watt and Mr. Skeen Surgeons -- 11. Papilio Capensis flavescens versicolor, spicibus nigrescentibus. This singular Fly Mr. John Starrenburgh sent me from the Cape of Good Hope, the ground of its Wings are yellow, varyin with a Philamot blush, if they hold it at a certain Position between you and the light -- 12. Tipula Londinensis angustissima. This I have observed on some Ponds about London. It's much slenderer and less than the common Water-Spider -- 13. Tipula Hamstediensis brevior, ex croceo varietaga. I have as yet met with this only in some ditches about Bell-size at Hamstead -- 14. Alga verrucosa Capensis. My Curious Friend Mr. Starrenburgh sent me this with several other elegant Sea-Productions, which shall be figured in my next Decade.
