Timotheo Pont. or Lidisdail Coloured. £255 inc delivery cheaper collected Timothy Pont surveyed most of Scotland in 1565 making the survey almost 100 years earlier than publication . Joan/Johan/John Blaeu (23 September 1596 – 28 May 1673) was a Dutch cartographer. He was born in Alkmaar, the son of cartographer Willem Blaeu. In 1620 he became a doctor of law but he joined the work of his father. In 1635 they published the Atlas Novus (full title: Theatrum orbis terrarum, sive, Atlas novus) in two volumes. He and his brother Cornelius took over the studio after their father died in 1638. Joan became the official cartographer of the Dutch East India Company.From “the rarest edition of Blaeu’s Large Atlases”: only ten of the proposed eleven volumes were completed and issued in a limited quantity between 1658 and the the 1672 fire, which brought work on the final volume to a halt Around 1649 Joan Blaeu published a collection of Dutch city maps named Tooneel der Steeden (Views of Cities). In 1651 he was voted into the Amsterdam council. In 1654 he published the first atlas of Scotland, devised by Timothy Pont. In 1662 he reissued the atlas with 11 volumes, and one for oceans. It was also known as Atlas Major.Clean full page and for once no offsetting. Liddesdale was also an historic district of Scotland, bordering Teviotdale to the east, Annandale to the west and Tweeddale to the north, with the English county of Cumberland across the border to the south. William Green was born in Manchester, son of a schoolmaster, due to his early ability he was sent to Dr Clarke's mathematical school in Salford to learn drawing and geometry. This allowed him to begin a career as a surveyor in 1778. Meeting with the historian and topographer Thomas West encouraged Green to develop his artistic abilities. He opened two drawing schools in Manchester and later spent a brief period in London where he exhibited at the Royal Academy. Green produced a significant body of work ranging from aquatints, etchings and water-colours which were detailed and scientifically observed pieces. He was permanently resident in the Lake District from about 1800, working from home in Ambleside and a studio in Keswick. He recorded his surroundings, venturing into hazardous terrain where there were no access roads, no way of keeping dry and where the only places to shelter were shepherd's cottages. In 1819 Green completed his major work The Tourist's New Guide to the Lake District. He died in April 1823 and was buried at Grasmere.
