A Modern Map Of Devonshire, Drawn From The Latest Surveys
Finely engraved and decorative map of the County by Thomas Conder for the publication "The New British Traveller". Features include a cartouche of a rural scene and coat of arms of Exeter. A reworking by Condor of Ellis (d.1796)  joined with William Palmer to produce a set of English county maps, published in Ellis' "New English Atlas", in 1765. Maps were later used in Ellis' "English Atlas; or a Complete Cartography of England and Wales" published in 1766, and reprinted in 1768  Ellis engraved some of the maps himself, while others were engraved by Louis de la Rochette, Palmer and W. Devon Map
James Pigot & Co's county maps were issued in their British Atlas , in several national and local business directories , and  in folding format as travelling maps. Amongst the first maps to be printed from steel instead of copper plates, allowing more accurate  detail . Atlas and directories went through several editions  to c.1857, later editions from 1846 re-named Slater's New British Atlas, with imprints changed accordingly.
