Boys and Dogs

Mezzotint Drawn by Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) (after) engraved by Henry Birche (engraver) approx. 520 x 390 mm . Henry Birche was a British mezzotinter active between 1790 and 1795. **Chaloner Smith stated that the name Henry Birche found on some plates was a pseudonym of Earlom, and this is adopted here, although he might well be incorrect. Weigel believed that Earlom used the name when working for B. B. Evans while contracted to Boydell, but Wessely noted some plates published by Evans during Boydell's lifetime that bear Earlom's name. Lennox-Boyd (George Stubbs, p.231) suggests that "Henry Birche" could instead be a pseudonym for Robert Laurie while he was in partnership with Sayer: he refers to a first state impression of a mezzotint in the Hornby collection at Liverpool, which suggests that the plate was Laurie's, but 'finished' by Earlom.**This is the LARGE plate£225 inc delivery
