Original steel engraving with surrounding pics of local life . . . you could tint if wished. Bookplate originates from: 'Verldshistoriskt Album, innehallande Femhundra Teckningar ofver Jordens skilde Lander och Folk'  aka "World History  Album, containing Five Hundred Drawings of  the different countries and people "( published Stockholm, 1857). The Habits and Arms of the Ancient Germans( Philippus Cluverius; 1580 - 1623)
 Published  pre 1711 from Germania Antiqua, which treated the ancient geography of Germany  by Philipp Clüver  born in 1580 in Danzig, Royal Prussia. He began studying law at the University of Leiden in 1601, but, under the influence of Joseph Scaliger, changed his field of study to history and geography. His father, Master of the Mint in Danzig, was displeased with Clüver for having abandoned his legal studies and withdrew all his financial support of his son's education. As a result, Clüver resorted to wandering through Hungary and Bohemia, where he served in the military for two years £45 inc delivery  plate worn Folds as issued so could go back in the book ..whole page

Map of Germany from "A New and Historical Grammar wherein the Geographical Part is truly Modern. . . ." 18.5 x 23.5 cm (approximately 7.25" x 9.25"). Uncolored as issued. Great "Jeffreys" cartouche in lower right corner shows castles on the Rhine. Quite clean with a couple of small foxing spots in the margin. Contemporary and near invisible stitched repair to fold splits. Thomas Jeffreys (or Gefferys) was a London engraver who was appointed Geographer to Frederick Prince of Wales and King George III. Published in   London by Thomas Salmon 1762.
