County map of GLOUCESTERSHIRE.

Published London. Swale, Awnsham and Churchill. 1695 1edn. Size of map 17 x 15 ins. Original double page copper engraved county map of Gloucestershire by Robert Morden, based on John Speed's map. Three 10-mile scales (62, 70 and 73 miles =1' Lat = 16 ins). Shell-type cartouche containing the title and Morden's name. The maps have graduated borders. Taken from Camden's Britannia of 1695,Robert Morden : d. 1703. Morden a bookseller and publisher plus an accomplished geographer and cartographer. Best known for his maps issued in 1695 in Gibson's revised edition of 'Camden's Brittannia' engraved by Sutton Nichols. William Camden (1551-1623) was a historian and antiquary whose works were reprinted and published over a period of 200 years. The original Latin text was first translated by Gibson in 1695. Morden was employed to replace the outdated maps by Saxton, engraved by Kip and Hole. He based his maps on manuscript sources plus the surveys of Ogilby and Morgan, seller, Palmer and the coastal charts of Cpt. Greenville Collins. His  contribution to cartography was the showing of longitudes measured from the meridian of St. Paul's Cathedral given in the form of time in minutes at the top of the map in Roman numerals and at the bottom in degrees. This was done to clarify local times that were taken from the sun as there was no national standard time. These maps were the first to show the roads based on Ogilby's earlier work of 1675, and included 3 scales to cover the various scales used in different parts of the country. . £205 framed inc delivery  substantially cheaper collected (£155) GLOUCESTERSHIRE by George Cole engraved Edward Brayley 1841

Dudgrove Double Lock , Thames & Severn Canal
Engraving by W B Cooke after an original drawing by S Owen. The double lock at Dudgrove was one of 67 locks required on the Thames & Severn Canal, which was completed in 1789 and allowed goods to be transported by water from London to the Severn. Britain's canals enjoyed their commercial heyday from the late 18th to the mid 19th century, when increasing competition from the railways began their decline. The Thames & Severn Canal carried its greatest tonnage of freight, over 89,000 tons, in 1841.second edition Drawn 1811 £35 inc delivery
