William Hogarth. .
William Hogarth (1697 - 1764) was born in London, to a lower-middle-class family with a schoolteacher father. During his youth he took up an apprenticeship with an engraver and goldsmith, but did not complete the apprenticeship. His father underwent periods of mixed fortune, and was at one time imprisoned in lieu of outstanding debts. Influenced by French and Italian painting and engraving his works are mostly satirical caricatures. He began to produce his own engraved designs in about 1710. He later took up oil painting, starting with small portrait groups called conversation pieces, going on to create a series of paintings satirising contemporary customs, but based on earlier Italian prints, of which the first was 'The Harlot's Progress' (1731), and perhaps the most famous 'The Rake's Progress'. His engravings were so plagiarised by Thomas Cook amongst others that he lobbied for the Copyright Act of 1735 as protection for writers and artists Original limited edition

All 'Hogarth' prints appearing AFTER this date are merely copies with either a re-cut plate or the 'engravers version'. The plates still survive at the V+A The volume includes a biographical essay and description of plated by John Nichols followed by 120 leaves printed with 156 plates, and including Beer Street /Gin Lane, Rake's Progess, Marriage à la Mode, Harlot's Progress

Simon Lord Lovat.
Seated portrait of the incredibly ugly, elderly, reprobate Jacobite rebel Simon Fraser 12th Baron Lovat (1667-1747). At the invitation of a Dr. Webster, Hogarth had travelled to The White Hart Inn, St. Albans to draw the famous rebel who had halted there briefly while on his way to trial in London, after the failure of the '45 Rebellion. Lovat was found guilty and executed on Tower Hill on April 9th 1747, the last person to be beheaded in England. Beginning with the torture of a dog as a child in the First stage of cruelty, Nero progresses to beating his horse as a man in the Second stage of cruelty, and then to robbery, seduction, and murder in Cruelty in perfection. Enthusiasm Delineated
Isaac Mills was commissioned by John Ireland to engrave a copy of Hogarth's original Enthusiasm Delineated. The work, a satire on the emphatic and emotionally-charged nature of Methodist preaching, was also intended to address recent discussion of the subject of 'enthusiasm' in art after a publication by Reynolds. Hogarth's plate was never published, perhaps owing to concerns amongst his friends in the clergy that the print might be seen by many as an attack on religion more generally. As a result, Hogarth dramatically reworked the plate and issued it instead as 'Credulity, Superstition, & Fanaticism: A Medley.' . It ridicules secular and religious credulity, and lampoons the exaggerated religious "enthusiasm" of the Methodist movement.
