This image showing some minor revision, was prepared for inclusion in the part-work edition of John Stow's "A Survey of the Cities of London and Westminster" Engraved by Blome as were all the maps and originally produced for the part-work edition of William Maitland's "History of London" (London : 1753-1756). Plan of the parish of St Giles's from the 1755 edition of Stowe's survey of England. Stow's survey is now mentioned in the imprint. Compared to the earlier edition of the plan, Southampton House, near the top left, is indicated as Bedford House. William Russell, the second son of the 5th Earl of Bedford, came to own Southampton House by marriage in 1669. Russell's son inherited the title and estates of the Dukes of Bedford and, in 1734, the name of the property was changed to Bedford House. Other changes include: the new church of St George's, marked 56 and a watch house on High Holborn. A pecked line encloses the parish. Copper engraved print, good condition. Built out of granite which quarried on Dartmoor,  a structure of 5 arches,  928 feet long and 49 feet wide. When the new bridge was finished and opened by King William and Queen Adelaide in 1831, traffic switched to the huge new structure and the demolition commenced on the old bridge. £185 inc delivery

During the eighteenth century "vues d'optique" or "perspective views" became extremely popular in England and Europe. Like other optical prints they capitalized on a connoisseur market eager for the latest novelty. English publishers such as John Bowles and Robert Sayer had great success with these optical views, which quickly developed into a collecting craze that swept through print shops on both sides of the Channel. "Vues d'optiques" were specifically designed to create the illusion of perspective when viewed with a zograscope or perspective glass. These viewing devices used a series of reflecting mirrors to enhance the illusion of depth in the print, creating a veritable "view" for the onlooker. Typically these prints depicted city or landscape views, and were horizontal in format. They had roughly the same dimensions and were sold with heavy opaque colouring, so as to show the tints when viewed through the lens. In their heyday, optical prints were a technical revolution; they could be seen in almost every fashionable drawing room, and were enjoyed by the poorer classes in print shops or at traveling fairs. For a small fee the citizens of Europe and England could travel the world without leaving their village. The "vue d'optique" was the first medium to bring the visible appearance of the wider world to a large European public. Ironically the artists and engravers who created these prints rarely had first hand knowledge of the scenes depicted, hence the views were often not as accurate as they were advertised to be. As a result of their constant handling optical prints such as these are rare, especially in good condition

PYNE, WILLIAM HENRY. 1769-1843.
William Henry Pyne was an English writer, illustrator and painter. He initially trained at a drawing academy in his native London and first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1790, and thereafter for six years, chiefly rural subjects. He specialized in picturesque scenes including groups of people rendered in pen, ink and watercolor. A founder of the Old Water-Colour Society in 1804, resigned five years later when it refused to increase the membership beyond 24 artists. Works include 600 illustrations for Microcosm of London (1803-06) and The Costumes of Great Britain (1808). He attracted the patronage of the successful publisher Rudolf Ackermann and engraved and wrote for many of his projects. Pyne wrote the publication The History Of The Royal Residences (1816-19), which brought together eminent watercolorists, draftsmen and aquatint engravers. This series shows the rooms at Windsor Castle, St. James's Palace, Kensington Palace, Hampton Court, Buckingham House (later Buckingham Palace), and Frogmore
