ice-cliffs of considerable height. Pieces were continually breaking
off, and floating out to sea; and a great fall happened while we
were in the bay, which made a noise like a cannon. The inner parts

Tardieu'. Although officially secretary to Dumont D'Urville on the
voyage of L'Astrolabe his artistic talents were used to record
zoological specimens and make views of New Zealand during the three

A Mapp of The islands before Batavia
Johan Nieuhof. Map set in a page of text, of Teluk Jakarata, with
relief shown by bathymetric soundings. Title at head of map:
Mr John Nieuhoff's Voyages". On verso: "and travels to the
East Indies." Text on verso describes leaving Batavia or
Jakarta on 17 December 1670. Page 364 probably from: Voyages
and travels into Brasil and the East Indies ca. 1682 Nieuhof's first
voyage was to Brazil, where he resided nine years, 1640-49. He gives
an account (with the correspondence) of all the proceedings and
transactions between the Dutch and Portuguese arising out of the
revolt of the latter, a map, plans of the Receif (Maurice Town) and
Olinda, illustrations of the animals, birds, insects, plants and
fruits, aboriginal tribes, and general description of the country
and its products. His second voyage was to the East Indies in 1G63,
visiting the Cape and China, a voyage described in his narrative of
the Dutch Embassy , returning to Holland in 1658.
In a second voyage to the East Indies (1659-70) he went to Amboyna,
Bouro,
Formosa, Malacca, Sumatra, Point de Galle, Goa, Persian Gulf,
Malabar Coast, returning to Batavia,£45
