Lithograph probably by Anton Hohenstein from the pic of George Washington who sat for artist Edward Savage in 1789, 1790, and 1795 for a large painting of him and his family. Edward Savage and David Edwin published an engraving of the family portrait in 1798. Both painting and print show Washington as military hero, statesman, and family man. Numerous artists made copies after this print in the following decades. Washington ordered four prints and hung one over the mantle in his family dining room at Mount Vernon. date (AMERICAN, 1761-1817).Depicted are George, Martha, George Washington Park Custis, Nellie Custis, and the servant William Lee. all labelled to base of pic. Ulysses Simpson Grant,
Pencil signed(by artist) Mezzotint dated and signed in plate 1894 Max Rosenthal. PUBLISHER : Porter & Coates, Philadelphia, The portrait was drawn by Max Rosenthal, a Russian emigrant who followed the Army of the Potomac and drew many Civil War scenes .He was born in Turck, Russian Poland, 23 November, 1833. In 1847 he went to Paris, where he studied lithography, drawing, and painting with M. Thurwanger, with whom he came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1849, where he completed his studies. He designed and executed the illustrations for various works, and during the civil war followed the Army of the Potomac, and drew every camp, up to the battle of Gettysburg. These drawings he reproduced at the time. Up to 1884 he did miscellaneous works, including about 200 lithographs of distinguished Americans. After 1884 he turned his attention to etching, and he has since executed 150 portraits of eminent Americans and British officers, together with numerous large plates On India paper remarque of medals etc slight rippling from printer base right AGAIN WILL NEED POSTING FLAT £225

Henry Clay

Henry Clay was Kentucky's most prominent nineteenth-century politician. He was Abraham Lincoln's political idol. His estate, Ashland, is now a mueum in Lexington. Alexander Hay Ritchie artist, born in Glasgow, Scotland, 14 January, 1822. Studied drawing under Sit' William Allan at the Royal institution, receiving a premium during the first year. In 1841 he came to New York, whence, after several years, he moved to Brooklyn, where he has since resided. He was elected an associate of the National academy in 1863 and an academician in 1871, and has exhibited frequently at the academy since 1848. His engravings, mostly mezzo-tinto include this "Henry Clay" (1848), "after his own painting. Image size: 26-7/16 x 19-5/8 inches. Plate mark: 30-1/8 x 21-3/8 inches. Sheet size: 33 x 24-3/8 inches.
