Advertising & Medical Posters  1870 - 1920

Victorian & Edwardian Antique Medical & Advertising Posters

Pre  about 1870  most  posters were  still woodblocks or metal engravings with little colour or design relying on simple motifs and the typography to gain attention as in the stunning pic above of an 1880's street. ( A site worth a read too )

After 1870 this changed with the "three stone lithographic process,"  which allowed artists to achieve every colour in the rainbow with as little as three stones - usually red, yellow and blue - printed with overlay to produce further colouring but technically difficult and expensive hence these being more expensive now .  By the outbreak of the first world war  most posters were printed using the mass production technique of photo offset, which resulted in the familiar dot pattern seen in newspapers and magazines. These were cheaper to produce but often also on cheap fragile paper  which needs to be perfect or quickly shreds from the edges  as in the early 20's posters we have.
