Somerset SHIRE
by  Pieter Van Den KeerePublished by Roger Rea, London 1666 in; "England Wales Scotland and Ireland Described and abridged with ye historie relation of things worthy memory from a farr larger voulume done by John Speed”  Image 85 x 125mm. tinted in gilt frames rare in this early format £95 inc delivery

Pieter Van den Keere 1571 - c.1746
A Dutch refugee from religious persecution who came to London in 1584 with his sister who married Jodocus Honduis. Returned to Amsterdam in1593. Emgraved a large number of maps for importanat cartographers including John Norden's map of London for Speculum Britanniae, an Atlas of the Netherlands 1617-22 and one complete and one incomplete set of British county maps.

Keere engraved 44 maps of the counties, some dated 1599. The English maps were based on Saxton, but were not initially published in book form. The original maps did not have text on the reverse which appeared in the 1617 issue along with the inclusion of Yorkshire and the British Isles. Some time before 1619 George Humble, John Speed's publisher, came into possession of the plates. Knowing the popularity of Speed's Theatre and the popularity of miniature atalases, Humble reissued the Keere maps in a pocket edition 'abridged from a larger voloume by J. Speed'. In 1627, he added the abridged text and hence they mistakenly became known as 'Miniature Speeds'. Of the 63 maps in the Atlas, 40 were reworked from the Keere plates, 16 copied from Speed and a further 7 maps added.
