Howitt : The son of a Nottinghamshire family of squires, Howitt became a professional artist specialising in Sporting subjects. He began as an amateur but due to financial difficulty he turned professional.Howitt worked at a private academy in Ealing as a drawing master early in his professional career. He began painting as a hobby. He enjoyed hunting and racing, mimicking this interest in his work. When the family fortune dwindled Howitt move to London were he would make a career out of his talent, flourishing as a professional artist. Samuel Howitt first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1785, and went on to establish a formidable reputation, perhaps second only to George Stubbs, for his accurate and lively depictions of natural history and sporting subjects. His superior watercolors and aquatints depict dramatic racing and hunting scenes as well as an array of conventional and exotic animals. He was the brother-in-law of Thomas Rowlandson, and although he was largely self-taught in his profession, he belonged to the artistic circles of the day. His first exhibition was in 1783 at the Incorporated Society of Artists, where he continued to exhibit. He married the sister of the celebrated caricaturist, Thomas Rowlandson (at times their work was draughted similarly).
Samuel HOWITT drew for several Published works, such as Etchings of Animals (1803), Oriental Field Sports (1805 and later), Fables of Aesop (1809 and later) and NOTABLY for the BRITISH SPORTSMAN.There are some 72 fine copperplate engravings. Published in 1779/1800 and in later editions to c.1812.

John Augustus Atkinson (1775-1833) was an English artist engraver and watercolourist.
Atkinson was born in London. In 1784, he went to St. Petersburg to his uncle James Walker, engraver to the empress Catherine the Great There he studied in the picture galleries, encouraged by Catherine and her son Paul I and was commissioned by Paul to paint large pictures of Russian history. In 1801, Atkinson returned to England, and in 1803 published 'A Picturesque Representation of the Manners, Customs, and Amusements of the Russians,' in 100 plates, drawn and etched by himself. He also painted in water-colours and in 1808 was elected to the Society of Painters in Water Colours.

John Heaviside Clark: worked as an engraver, book illustrator and a landscape and marine painter. He was born in Scotland, but worked in London from 1802 to 1832. Clark exhibited his works, mainly maritime and landscape subjects, at the Royal Academy from 1812 to 1832. He was known as ‘Waterloo Clark’ as a result of the many sketches he made of the scene immediately after the conclusion of the Battle of Waterloo. Publications illustrated by Clark include ‘Field Sports Etc. of the Native Inhabitants of New South Wales’ (1813) and ‘Practical Illustration of Gilpin’s Day’ (1824). He died in Edinburgh in October 1863.

Matthew Dubourg was a London-based aquatint engraver of sporting, military and topographical views, made after works by contemporary artists. He often collaborated with the draughtsman and aquatint engraver John Clark. Dubourg exhibited two miniature portraits at the Royal Academy in 1786 and 1797, when his address was 17 Duke Street, off Manchester Square. He later exhibited a ‘Scene near Vauxhall’ at the Academy in 1808, by which time he had moved to 22 East Street, Lambeth.

Samuel HOWITT (1756-1822) The son of a Nottinghamshire family of squires, Howitt became a professional artist specialising in Sporting subjects. He began as an amateur but due to financial difficulty he turned professional.Howitt worked at a private academy in Ealing as a drawing master early in his professional career. He began painting as a hobby. His superior watercolors and aquatints depict dramatic racing and hunting scenes as well as an array of conventional and exotic animals. He was the brother-in-law of Thomas Rowlandson, and although he was largely self-taught in his profession, he belonged to the artistic circles of the day.
