He is best known for his incomparable illustrations of English history and culture. In the summer of 1771, as a reader in the British Museum, he was commissioned to draw illustrations based on medieval manuscripts. The result was his first work, the Royal and Ecclesiastical Antiquities of England, in 1773. Joseph was interested in the, hand-drawn illustrations of dress he saw in these manuscripts, a number of which dated back to Saxon times. The next work was the two-volume set of The Dress and Habits of the People of England. Volume I was published in 1796, with Volume II appearing in 1799. He sorted through vast amounts of primary material to illustrate and write his histories, Joseph Strutt (1749-1802) This set is of full-page sepia-tinted mezzotint engravings, not the later copper line engraving often found tinted by helpful Victorian ladies.
