J.M.W.Turner

The son of a London barber, Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775 - 1851 is generally acknowledged to be the most creative and perceptive artist that Britain has ever produced. By the age of 13 he had already been admitted to the Royal Academy Schools and a year later was exhibiting his first watercolours at the Academy. By 24 he was an associate member. A master with watercolors and with oils, Turner is celebrated for his innovative treatment of light on a wide range of landscape subjects. Later works such as "Snow Storm: Steam Boat off a Harbor's Mouth" make it clear why many view him as an important precursor to the imminent Impressionists and modern abstract art. All are large full plate images very crisp and clean from a disbound book or folio . His Topographic pics will also be listed on the appropriate county page. but larger ones  appear here for convenience

The son of a London barber, Joseph Mallord William Turner J M W TURNER RA (1775-1851) was born in London, England on April 23rd 1775. His father was a wigmaker and barber in Covent Garden. He studied at the Royal Academy schools and was to become one of the foremost painters in oils and watercolours of his generation. It was in 1806 that W F Wells suggested that Turner's work could reach a much wider public, were they to be engraved and published in book form. Turner etched the plates himself under and conscientiously supervised every stage of their production, it was even said that he trained an entire school of engravers. This process ensured that the engravings of Turner's work were indeed as effective and desirable as his paintings. From the age of 19, until his death in 1851, Turner was involved in the production of over 800 prints based on his paintings, watercolours, and drawings. He was intimately concerned with the production and reworking of plates after his works, often providing copious instructions and suggestions to the engravers. It was through the dissemination of these prints that Turner gained his reputation as one of the greatest and best-loved English painters. Even after his death his romantic paintings served as a continued source of inspiration for printmakers across Britain and the Continent. His grand paintings were reproduced in almost every medium available, from large steel plates, to mezzotints and chromolithographs. His works appeared as book illustrations and vignettes, as well as large separately published fine art prints. Turner's impact on the history of British painting is intimately connected with the print trade. Reproductive examples of his work were eagerly viewed and collected by the public, establishing his reputation as the greatest landscape painter of his generation. Turner not only viewed printmaking as an invaluable source of advertising, but valued the medium as a true art form. Prints remained a major focus throughout Turner's long career and helped shape his work as much as they advocated his talent. Cooke's Picturesque views of the Southern Coast of England and Picturesque Views of England and Wales. The latter was first published in 1827/8 and was the first main publication to include Turner's work. WB Cooke's Rivers of England and published in 1823 Picturesque views became highly fashionable in the 1820s and this encouraged Turner to continue to produce work for these publications. Although these were in book form they were merely plates with text between covers. The problem that he had with his views was that he wasn't particularly a figure painter, therefore, he had to crowd the foregrounds of his pictures with interesting images in order to satisfy the public. Being an artist rather than a topographer, Turner tended to include a certain amount of visual illusion in his work. In his lifetime, Turner travelled extensively throughout Europe, particularly after the end of the Napoleonic Wars. All the time producing images of landscapes and towns. The Turner Gallery was published in 1875, after his death and includes 120 fine steel engraved plates, covering a range of his works. From views and landscapes in Great Britain, Germany and Italy, to studies of ships, mythical scenes and scenes from classical Rome. TURNER, Joseph Mallord William:
