The Road from Gloucester and Montgomery passing Ross on Wye, Hereford and Presteigne..

Page 71 From a series of 100 strip Road Maps of England and Wales each measuring about 17 x 13 inches 46 x 34 cm Published in 1675 & 1698 .John Ogilby, born 1600 near Edinburgh, died 1676, had an extremely versatile career, being a bookseller, translator, printer, dancing master, theatre owner, master of the King's Revels, and finally a geographer. His claim to fame rests most securely on his last accomplishment. He made the first survey of the roads of England and Wales, the results being published in a folio volume entitled Britannia, Vol. 1.....a Geographical and Historical Description of the Principal Roads thereof, 1675. This had 100 copper-plates showing the roads in continuous strip form, six or seven to a plate, with a decorative heading enclosing the title. Ogilby was the first to adopt the statute mile of 1,760 yards. Before Ogilby different scales were used in different parts of the country......he revolutionised the printed map: from his time, roads began to be inserted on the county maps, and this soon became an established practise £155 two areas loss central area . . easily disguised INCLUDES :-GLOUCESTER (Glocester); Highnam (Hinam Church); (Bird Wood); Huntley; Dursley Cross (Durley Cross); Lea; (enter Herefordshire); Weston under Penyard (Weston); ROSS ON WYE (Rofs); (6 Arches); Wilton; (Pitchers Common); (Harods End); Harewood End (Harwood); Much Birch (Mich Birch); Much Dewchurch (Dewchurch); HEREFORD; (Mr Cunisby's Almshouses) Holmer (Homer Church); Kings Pyon (Kings Peon); Birley (Berley Church); (Stonebridge with 4 arches); Pembridge; Coombes-Moor (Comb); Presteigne (Prestaine); Norton; (forest); Knighton; (enter Shropshire); (Rose and Crown inn); Clun (Clunn); (Blynn); Bishops Castle; Churchstoke (Cherstock), (a mill).(Lord Herbert's Park);MONTGOMERY . . . gloucestershire, herefordshire, shropshire, radnorshire, montgomeryshire
