Albertus Seba... Natural History + Serpents

serpents, snakes ,birds, insects, plants. Other serpents base of the page

Albertus or Albert Seba was a Dutch pharmacist, zoologist, and collector. Seba accumulated one of the largest cabinets of curiosities in the Netherlands during his time and his prints of serpents are some of the finest detailed early natural history prints. Oddly when inspected they all have individual faces mostly smiling with a few grumpy amphibians.

These engravings are from the rare,  publication of Albertus Seba’s Locupletissimi rerum naturalium thesauri accurata descriptio, et iconibus artificiosissimis expressio, per universam physices historiam. The work was published in Amsterdam by Janssonio-Waesbergios, & J. Wetstenium, & Gul. Smith between 1734 and 1765. Seba utilized leading scientists to aid in creating Locupletissimi… including H. Boerhaave, P. van Musschenbroek, P. Massuet, H. D. Graubius, and P. Artedi.

Seba, was a wealthy Dutch apothecary and member of the Dutch East India Company, thus one of the earliest collectors of natural curiosities and exotic species. His collection  included birds, reptiles such as lizards and snakes, butterflies and other insects, shells and exotic sea life, unusual mammals such as bats and anteaters, as well as exotic plants. The collection also included some fakes, intended to attract attention and interest, such as a seven-headed hydra.

Seba’s first collection was sold to Peter the Great in 1716 and became part of his Kunstkammer or Kunstkamera in St. Petersburg, a museum of rare natural history specimens. Seba’s second collection was illustrated and described in a set of engraved-plate volumes. Seba recruited artists, including Pierre Tanje, a Dutch engraver, to illustrate his thesaurus of animals. The plates are characterized by artistic arrangements of specimens, sometimes apocryphal in colour or form. Some specimens were arranged by species, while other prints including bizarre juxtapositions of seemingly unrelated animals and plants. Seba wrote most of the text for the first two volumes that accompanied the engravings..

Seba developed an interest in exotic species from his travels on the East and West Indies and purchases from world travelers. He exploited his relationship with the Dutch East India Company to advance his collection thus gathering specimens from Sri Lanka, Greenland, Indonesia, Brazil, and other far-flung places. Many of the plates from the work depicted specimens from Seba’s own collection.

Seba’s “cabinet of curiosities” included wonderful beautiful and bizarre subjects and attracted many natural historians, including Carl Linnaeus. Seba’s cabinet played an important part in the Linnaeus classification of the natural world. Maria Sybilla Merian also utilized his cabinet to complete her great work on Surinamese insects.  Some of Seba’s original collection is still on display in museums around the world

Some will have little defects often in the margin or small worm holes. If exact condition report is wanted just ask

John Johnston ( Jonston, Jonstone or Johnstone, 1603-1675) was a descendant of a Scottish family. Born in Sambter, Poland, he studied extensively at the famous universities of the day, including St. Andrews, Scotland, Cambridge & Leiden. In 1622 Jonston studied at several centres in Prussia, after that, he visited England and Scotland (collecting already in 1623 valuable information about some British species). After travelling around Germany, France, Italy and Holland, he came back to Britain, to study in Cambridge and London. Afterwards, he graduated in Medicine in Leyden, Dutch city in which he was offered the Medicine chair at University and where he published his first works. Several years later, he was offer the same chair at the electorate of Brandenburg, preferring, however, to continue studying in private and develop his masterpiece: the Historia Naturalis, which would be published for the first time in Frankfurt am Main between 1649 and 1653.The second edition of the work, including trees and plants, would be released in Amsterdam between 1657 and 1663. After many years traveling in Europe, he settled in Silesia.
Merian, was a long  lineage of printers, artists  and superb engravers. Matthaeus Merian senior (1593 – 1650) was the printer and father of the Matthaeus Merian brothers junior (1621 - 1687), Kaspar Merian (1627) and their sister María Sibylla Merian (1647 - 1717), the latter from his second marriage to a Dutch woman. Sibylla was firstly an entomologist and a great draftswoman, painter and engraver of plants and insects her work is in the botanical section . However, the most hard working artist of the family was Matthaeus Merian junior, to whom Jonston’s most famous copper engravings have been attributed. More than one plate of this encyclopaedia has the signature Matthaeus Merian Junior Fecit

Francois Nicolas Martinet was a French engraver and draughtsman. Born in 1731, Martinet  trained as an engineer and draftsman.  Martinet's son Alexandre eventually assisted him and completed many engravings, as shown from signatures and dates on the prints. Martinet also had two sisters, Angélique and Marie Thérèse, who were engravers as well, but it is not known if both worked with him.  Employed from 1756 by the court  as Graveur du Cabinet du Roi, under the auspices of the Menus Plaisirs du Roi. Some of these he engraved himself, while others were drawn by him but engraved by his sister Thérèse Martinet (born c. 1731) but as both signed Martinet this is not helpful  £115 mounted  due to size  these are considerably cheaper collected or if a number are wanted due to joint postage.
