View of the River Thames near Westminster Bridge,
showing boat traffic on the River and some windmills and other buildings along the banks. For centuries there was no bridge at Westminster, and by the 18th century traffic had to use a waterman, the horse ferry, or go around London Bridge or Putney Bridge. However this was inadequate by this time as Westminster had grown so much. The bridge was started in 1738 and opened in 1750. 1777 Etching and aquatint Lettered below image with title, followed by "From a Picture in the Possession of David Garrick Esqr", and with production details: "W. Marlow Pinxit / Engraved by V. Green and F. Jukes / Published Febry 20th, 1777 by J. Boydell, Cheapside."

Taylor, c.1780The York Buildings Waterworks' Water Tower was a water tower on the north bank of the River Thames and a dominant feature of the 18th century London skyline. The water tower was a wooden structure, 70 feet high (21 metres) and with an octagonal cross-section. It was erected in the late 17th century on a site at the end of Villiers Street, by the York Watergate, now part of the Victoria Embankment Gardens. The Survey of London includes a drawing showing the building.
