In the 1650s he lived in exile in Europe with King Charles II of England. Upon the restoration of Charles to the throne in 1660, Ormonde became a major figure in English and Irish politics, holding many high government offices. This Portraiture is in memory of Bertram Ashburnham of Ashburnham in Sussex,who in the tyme of King Harold was Warden of the Cinqueports" engraved  by Edw: Le Davis and drawn by Hollar  1679. Engraving, image 220 x 170mm.  Bertram de Ashburnham (c.1010 – 1066), ‘Constable of Dover Castle and Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports’; in armour, with fabric collar and belt. This unfortunate Bertram is alleged to have met with a variety of deaths: to have been killed while fighting at Hastings, to have been executed by William the Conqueror outside the gates of Canterbury 'where he lived much esteemed, and to have been very active in the cause of liberty and his country', and to have met a similar fate at Dover. John Smith (1652-1743) was a gifted and ambitious printmaker and publisher whose long career began in the reign of Charles II and closed after the accession of George II. He was born in Northamptonshire and worked in London, specializing in the relatively new technique of mezzotint printing. Between 1683 and 1729 he produced over three hundred prints. Trained as a printmaker he was able to retain a controlling hand when, in the early 1690s, he turned from pure printmaking to printmaking and publishing. John Egerton, 3rd Earl of Bridgewater (9 November 1646 - 19 March 1701) was the eldest son of John Egerton, 2nd Earl of Bridgewater and his wife Elizabeth Cavendish. His maternal grandparents were William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Newcastle and his first wife Elizabeth Basset.  Painted when  First Lord of the Admiralty. By and published by John Smith, after Sir Godfrey Kneller, Bt Mezzotint  340 mm x 255   cut to image with some light edge soiling, large  old crease diagonal left ,soft crease at base. John Smith (1652-1743) was a gifted and ambitious printmaker and publisher whose long career began in the reign of Charles II and closed after the accession of George II. He was born in Northamptonshire and worked in London, specializing in the relatively new technique of mezzotint printing. Between 1683 and 1729 he produced over three hundred prints. Trained as a printmaker he was able to retain a controlling hand when, in the early 1690s, he turned from pure printmaking to printmaking and publishing. The refinement and 'modernity' of his prints brought him fame and then material prosperity and Smith's career, largely independent of interference from outside publishers, must have been an inspiration to William Hogarth (1697-1764) and the next generation of printmakers. £95 inc delivery
