This work, in English 'Voyage to the South Pole and Oceania on the corvettes Astrolabe and Zelee, during the years 1837-1840', was the account of a scientific expedition to study the geography, geology, anthropology and natural history of the region. During the voyage Dumont d'Urville claimed Adelie Land in Antarctica. He died in the first railway crash in Versailles two years later. During Dampier's first voyage (1679-1691, a circumnavigation), a Mosquito (or Miskito) Indian named William was marooned on Juan Fernández Island. He was later rescued by Dampier. This occured about 25 years before Alexander Selkirk's rescue from the same island.

from Capt. George Vancouver on his round the world voyage 1791-1795. Commanding two ships, the "Discovery" and the "Chatham" Vancouver left England in April 1791, & sailed via the Cape of Good Hope, to southwest Australia and New Zealand, before heading to Tahiti where he arrived on December 30, making landfall in Hawaii in February of 1792. This small engraving was included in the French Octavo edition of Vancouver's Voyages, and published in Paris in 1800.£20

In 1791 George Vancouver set sail from England to explore America's Pacific Northwest coast. On his return in 1795 via Cape Horn, Vancouver put into Valparaiso Harbor on the coast of Chile for repairs to the mainmast of his ship Discovery. He stayed there from the 25th March to the 7th of May & during that time his officers drew sketches of the harbor & its environs. In this fine view the Discovery is shown at anchor with a smaller vessel with the town & harbor in the background. Engraved by Alexandre Tardieu it was included in the French edition of Vancouver's "Voyage de Decouvertes a L'Ocean Pacifique du Nord" published in Paris in 1800. £20

Size 12 x 21s+ cm £20 RARE A famous hoax :In 1766 the Dolphin, a ship commanded by Commodore John Byron (nicknamed "Foul-Weather Jack" and grandfather of the poet Byron) returned to London from circumnavigating the globe. While it lay in dock, a rumor leaked out that the crew of the Dolphin had encountered a tribe of nine-foot giants in Patagonia, South America. This rumor first appeared in print on May 9, 1766 in the Gentleman's Magazine. Other newspapers, such as the London Chronicle, then picked up the story.
