Looks to be a leaf from Novus Orbis Sive Description Indiae Occidentalis.By Antonio de HERRERA Y TORDESILLAS, (1559-1625).Published by Amsterdam: Michel Colin, 1622., The books consisted of the first (Herrera's "Indiae Occidentalis.") and second (Jacob Le Maire's "Historia Navigationis Australis") parts of the book are concerned with the New World,`The second volume details the Pacific island groups and New Guinea, in search of Terra Australis between 1615 and 1617. Le Maire's was the last of the 17th-century expeditions to search for the unknown continent from the east, and in addition to showing that New Guinea was indeed an island and not the western most edge of the imaginary continent, his discovery of and voyage around Cape Horn relieved the trading monopoly of the East India Company by finding an alternative route to the East Indies which did not violate the Company Charter which prevented other Dutch trading companies from using the existing routes of the Straits of Magellan and Cape Hope. ** This is presumed not to be Oz of course but without the book to identify further needs a scholar** Definitely seventeenth century in Latin £95 soft crease full page

Araucaria is a genus of coniferous trees. There are 19 species in the genus, with a highly disjunct distribution in New Caledonia (where 13 species are endemic), Norfolk Island, eastern Australia, New Guinea, Argentina, Chile, and southern Brazil. Fossil evidence indicates that ancestral araucaria forests resembling the present-day Monkey Puzzle date back to the age of dinosaurs.

John Skinner Prout (1806-1876) was an architectural illustrator and painter. Born in Plymouth and nephew of Samuel Prout (Topographical illustrator, drawing master and watercolourist). John specialised in similar subjects to his uncle but was practically self-taught. He was elected a member of the New Watercolour Society (NWS) on his return from Australia in 1849, where he visited Sydney and Hobart. He had already forfeited his membership of the NWS in 1838 by being overseas. John settled in Bristol after 1849 where he became a good friend of W. J. Muller (artist). He later moved to London where he died, at Camden Town on 29th August 1876.
