Canoe, ò Barche praticate dagli Habitanti della Guinea.
Large copper engraving from Isolario dell'Atlante Veneto Venice: . by CORONELLI. size 48.0 x 61.0 cm 1691-98Published Venice,  Fold as issued; 3cm long tear left centerfold, stopping short of platemark but in decorated margin ; Vincenzo Coronelli (1650 - 1718)    Coronelli was  a cleric and an encyclopedist, with an interest in geography and cartography. He joined the Franciscan Order in Venice in 1665 and six years later entered the convent of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, which was to become his professional workshop. In 1681 Coronelli served as Royal Cartographer to King Louis XIV in Paris, gaining special access to the most current records on world geography sent in from the colonies, and provided by the French Academy of Sciences.Coronelli returned to Venice in 1684 and founded the Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti, a geographical society with membership drawn from the aristocracy and church hierarchy, and a year later he was appointed Cosmographer to the Republic of Venice. He also started a successful publishing career, and was sole author or contributor to over 140 titles and produced several hundred maps, either printed separately or as parts of atlases. Coronelli published his groundbreaking cartographic work in a number of notable publications, including the two-part Isolario Atlante Veneto (1691-1692; 1696-98), and the Corso Geografico Universale (1692 & 1695). He is also credited with being the first to publish an encyclopedia in alphabetic order. By the end of the 17th century, he was perhaps the most famous map publisher in Europe and received constant requests from his contemporaries for information that would enable them to bring their atlases up to date. Shortly after his death, however, his name and work were quickly forgotten, and he remained in obscurity for several centuries.  £250  should be in a museum

From John Ogilby's 'Africa ' which was based on the Dutch publication of two years earlier by Jacob van Meurs of Olfert Dapper's Naukeurige Beschrijvinghe Der Afrikaensche .... Using the same copperplate maps and views, this translation was the best English account of the continent to that time and was intended to be part of a series of atlases of all parts of the world, which, in fact, was never completed. The plates were finely engraved and represent evocative European perceptions of the regions as known during the seventeenth century. The following date from 1668-1670.
Ogilby, a London geographer, historian, and publisher, was born in Edinburgh in 1600. In addition to being a bookseller, printer, and translator, he was also a dancing teacher and theatre owner; he was appointed Royal Cartographer in 1671. "Africa" was the first colume of Ogilby's planned "English Atlas" series, and is the most comprehensive English work on that continent published in the 17th century. It is of particular interest owing to its numerous plates of natural history subjects and for the accounts of the natives of southern Africa
