Cornelis de Bruyn is remembered chiefly for the records of his extensive travels in Egypt, Persia, India, and other countries, illustrated with his own designs., Cornelis de Bruijn (also spelled Cornelius de Bruyn, (1652-1726/7) was a Dutch artist and traveler. He made two large tours and published illustrated books with his observations of people, buildings, plants and animals. This is the account of De Bruyn's second voyage. He left The Netherlands in 1701 and sailed to Archangel and on to Moscow, where he lived for more than a year. In 1703 he reached Persia, and after nearly another year in Isfahan, he continued to Persepolis, the ancient Achaemenid palace. Geographers of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries recognized two great divisions of their discipline. These were ‘General’ or ‘Universal’ geography, which dealt with ‘the whole Earth in general, and explain[ed] its properties without regard to particular countries’ The Dutch and other  editions were reprinted for the Uk market making the same image appear in many formsThomas Bankes, Edward Warren Blake, and Alexander Cook's A New Royal Authentic and Complete System of Universal Geography (hereafter Thomas Bankes's). A massive folio volume of 990 double-columned pages, this was a popular work, running to six editions in the  years from 1775 to 1797
