Crispin de PASSE

Crispin Van de Passe (1597-1670) "Hortus Floridus". ENGRAVINGS  from Crispin van de Passe’s Hortus Floridus, published in 1614-1616. The Hortus Floridus was a collection of 160 engravings depicting flowering plants, and it was one of the most popular botanical books of the 17th century. Crispin Van de Passe was an engraver, draughtsman, print publisher and writer. His father was also a well known engraver, and Crispin often assisted him in his productions as well. His work is close in style to that of his father, but his prints of the 1620’s and 1630’s began to be distinguishable by a remarkably fine, sketchy use of the burin. Van de Passe was very well known for his portrait work of European rulers and their families, scholars and statesmen, as well as for his work “Hortus Floridus”, which he designed and engraved most of the plates for. This work, published in Amsterdam between 1614-1616, was one of the first, and is considered the most famous and influential of the early Florilegia. It contained five parts in one volume. In the main section of the book, the plates are arranged according to the seasons, and an additional part primarily depicting tuberous or bulbous plants. The majority of the plates were engraved by Crispin Van de Passe, however, his brothers were known to have assisted as well. The work was originally published in Latin, with later editions having French, Dutch and English translations.   £185 each

Johann Theodor de Bry, 'Florilegium novum' 1612

Florilegium novum, hoc est: variorum maximeque rariorum florum ac plantarum singularium un cum suis radicibus & cepis.  Published in Oppenheim: by  J.T. de Bry '1612' [c. 1614]. Johann Theodor de Bry (1561 – 31 January 1623) was an engraver and publisher. Biography De Bry was born in Strasbourg, the elder son and pupil of Dirk de Bry. He greatly assisted his father in works such as, the Florilegium novum, which was published at Frankfort in 1612, and, with the assistance of his brother Johannes Israel, he completed the two volumes of Boissard's 'Romanae urbis Topographia et Antiquitates,' which were left unfinished at his father's death. He also published 'Emblemata secularia,' 1596, and added considerably to the collection of Portraits of Illustrious Persons, begun by his father. His pupil was Frederik van Hulsen. He died at Frankfort in 1623. His prints are signed with the initials J. T. B. or a monogram. After his father's death in 1598, Johann Theodore took over the family's printing house. Sometimes before 1613, he moved the enterprise from Frankfurt to Oppenheim, where the firm published important works by the English Paracelcist physician Robert Fludd, and the Bohemian Michael Maier (also a follower of Paracelsus) who had served as physician to Emperor Rudolph II. Many of the works printed by De Bry also featured engravings by his son-in-law Matthäus Merian, for example A Hundred Ethico-Political Emblems by Julius Gulielmus Zincgreff (1619) which is dedicated to and celebrates the Elector Palatine Frederick V (Oppenheim's ruler). Historian Frances Yates suggests the De Bry publishing house had close ties to the Elector's court at Heidelberg given that it printed works by supporters of Frederick and the short-lived attempt to have him installed as King of Bohemia. She also points out the important role it played in publishing works (such as those by Fludd and Maier) in defense of the Fraternity of Rosicrucians. After the capture of Oppenheim in 1620, De Bry moved the printing house back to Frankfurt.

Emanuel Sweert, 1612  Florilegium

Dutch painter and nurseryman Emanuel Sweert (1552-1612) lived during the time when Europeans were receiving  new and exotic plants brought by Dutch, English, and French trading vessels from all over the world. To meet  public interest for these plants, many wealthy merchants established nurseries in order to meet demand. This then resulted in the production of nursery catalogues creating a new market for accurate  botanical illustration.
Sweert prepared the Florilegium as a guide for stock for the Frankfurt Fair of 1612. The plates, depicting some 560 bulbs and flowers, were drawn from Johann Theodore de Bry's Florilegium, which in turn was copied from Pierre Vallet. Sweert's  illustrations resulted in  six editions of the work between 1612 and 1647. At the time of the fair, Sweert was in the employ of Emperor Rudolf II as head of his gardens in Vienna. The older editions are on an odd semi vellum paper which is normally filthy and less opaque than rag paper so easily spotted !

Icones Plantarum Medicinalium

Icones is devoted to the medicinal properties of native European plants, many of them figured and described here for the first time. It is dedicated to Joseph II and very much in the 'Jacquin' style; in fact, a few of the plates are re-impressions of Jacquin plates. The work is a famous rarity; " .  Full title 'Icones plantarum medicinalium secundum systema Linnæi digestarum, cum enumeratione virium et usus medici, chirurgici atque diætetici'.  Published in Vienna, by Rudolph Græffer & Soc., 1788-1792.  ** These seem to be original coour enhanced with gum arabic**

Joseph Jacob Plenck ( Plencke in some works)  (1735-1807) was an Austrian physician and the founder of modern dermatology. He was born the son of a Viennese bookbinder and studied medicine; he served in the Seven Years' War, and despite his unfinished education, he trained as a regimental doctor. In 1770, he was appointed by Empress Maria Theresa professor of surgery and obstetrics at the University of Trnava; from there he went on to Budapest and in 1785, was finally appointed professor of chemistry and botany at the Military-Medical Academy in Vienna (Josephinum). From 1788, he published seven volumes of his 'Icones plantarum medicinalium'. In his work, which contains a total of 758 coloured copper engravings, he described the medical use of all of the then known herbal plants, according to Linnaeus' new botanical classification system, and wrote all the text in German and Latin. Plates by Plenck hardly ever are offered for sale in decent condition and are rare!

A rare work containing detailed folio prints illustrated by Ehret, Mynde & others. Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-1770) was a botanist, entomologist and master botanical illustrator. A highly skilled and prolific artist Ehret, established himself as the pre-eminent botanical illustrator of the 18th century collaborating with such  as Linnaeus .Ehret was born in Heidelberg, Germany, and trained as a gardener. He became the protégé of the Margrave of Baden-Durlach, who hired him to design town and palace gardens at Karlsruhe and make paintings of his flowers. After leaving the Margrave’s employ, relocated in Regensburg, where he met Johann Wilhelm Weinmann, and was employed  to produced drawings which were  his first published works, for Phythanoza Iconographia. Frankfurt, Anton Heinscheidt, 1719. The Viridarium Reformatum is an important collection of botanical illustrations by a number of artists, Johann Theodor de Bry most prominent among them. It is thought that Valentini, a physician, professor of medicine and collector of natural history specimens, had acquired de Bry's plates from his famous Florilegium renovatum et auctum of 1641, done in collaboration with son-in-law Matthäus Merian.
