Jonston + Matthaus Merian Botanic 1768  etc

John Jonston (or Joannis Jonstoni or  Johnstone, 1603-1675) was a descendant of a Scottish family. Born in Sambter, Poland, he studied extensively at the famous universities of the day, including St. Andrews, Scotland, Cambridge & Leiden. Engravings from 'Historiae Naturalis de Arboribus et Plantis. Libri X' Volume 1 .  Published by  Franciscus Josephus Eckebrecht, for Heilbronn: 1768-1769. 2 volumes, folio. (13 5/8 x 8 1/4 inches). . Engraved allegorical frontispiece by Melchior Küsell after Matthaeus Merian, 137 engraved plates after Matthaeus Merian .The original edition of this work was first published in Frankfurt in 1662 under the title 'Dendrographiae sive Historiae Naturalis de Arboribus et Fructibus'. This edition  was published by Eckebrecht after he had acquired the complete set of the original printing plates for that 1662 edition. These he reprinted and added the second edition of the text so the print date is after the death of the artist and engraver. Matthaus Merian was a leading German engraver of the day, from a prominent family of engravers and artists, and the father of Maria Merian
** Due to their age and paper Merian used they have been done with flash as this accentuates any paper defects. There is also another image done in daylight to show less noticeable when framed**
