Vue générale de la Ville de Rome
Vue d'Optique by Louis-Joseph Mondhare (1734-1799) In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries there were many popular speciality establishments in Paris, Augsburg and London which produced optical viewing devices and special engravings to be viewed through them. In the 18th century the optical print or vue optique came into existence, whose exaggerated converging lines were intended to produce the optical illusion of deep recession. The viewing devices for which these perspective prints were produced consisted of a lens and a mirror, this requiring the use of reversed or mirror-image pictures Contemporary handcoloured engraving, so called 'Vue d" Optique' or optical print or 'perspective view'. Published by Mondhare, Paris ca. 1770. Size: 34 x 39 cm £185 inc delivery mount is mucky so sent non uk sans mount

A Cyyclopian Gate at Signi ( Signa /Florence ?)
John Izard Middleton (1785-1849) was born just outside of Charleston, South Carolina to the prominent family of Mary and Arthur (signer of the declaration of Independence) Middleton. What little is known about John Izard Middleton is fascinating to say the least. Indeed 19th century American author, social critic and art professor Charles Eliot Norton dubbed Middleton “the first American Classical Archaeologist.” John Izard Middleton was born at Middleton Place Plantation nestled on the banks of the Ashley River near Charleston, North Carolina in the year 1785. Between the years 1808-1809 Middleton compiled a group of detailed sketches for the purpose of publishing a folio-sized book which he did in 1812 under the title “Grecian Remains in Italy: A Description of Cyclopian Walls, and Roman Antiquities. With Topographical and Picturesque Views of Ancient Latium.”Full page aquatint full borders  some creasing £165 folio sized

Gabriel Perelle, (1604 - 1677)An eminent French designer and engraver, Gabriel Perelle received instructions in painting, etching and engraving from Daniel Rabel. His first published etchings bear the date of 1635. For the following thirty years Perelle created a large number of superbly crafted etchings of landscapes and views. Gabriel Perelle's last etchings date from around 1665. After that time he was commissioned by the King of France to draw maps and military plans.
Although he engraved designs after the work of other masters, such as, Poussin, Paul Bril, Asselyn and Silvestre, most of Perelle's graphic oeuvre (including this original example) was both designed and engraved by his hand. And interestingly, even with his topographical views, Perelle frequently embellished his compositions with imaginary ruins and other objects. Thus Perelle's etched views are also Utopian landscapes of the mind. This price is delivered framed and glazed  much cheaper collected
